Frequently Asked Questions


1. Which events are in-person and which ones are virtual?

The Inaugural Festival Day (Saturday, July 15, 2023) and the Festival Closing Day (Friday, September 15, 2023) are in-person events. Our multi-session workshops and master classes are virtual. Two of our special reading and performance events will be in-person, while the remaining sessions will be virtual. Craft talks will either be in-person or virtual. Please click here for details.

A limited number of scholarships are available on a demonstrated need basis, please read further down for more details.

3. How do I register?

  • Register for the Closing Day event with an email to events@kwelijournal.org with “LitFest23 Closing Day Registration” in the subject line.

4. What if I make a mistake on my registration form?

Please read CAREFULLY through all questions to ensure you are choosing and filling in what you intend to. Once you submit your registration, you can no longer make changes yourself. However, if you’ve incorrectly listed something, contact Chantel Kelly at events@kwelijournal.org as soon as possible.

5. What if I want to cancel part or all of my registration?

If you cancel your registration before July 1st, you will be charged a 25% cancellation fee.

Any cancellation on or after July 2nd, cannot be refunded.

Note, refunds will NOT be issued immediately. We will process refunds after the festival.

6. Will recordings of the events be available to attendees later?

We will NOT be recording in-person sessions for #KweliLitFest23. However, if you subscribe to our newsletter, we will be sharing highlights from various sessions after the festival.

7.  Are scholarships available for the festival?

YES, Kweli has a limited amount of scholarships for first-time, unpublished, and un-agented writers who exhibit a financial need. If you are in need of a scholarship, you must complete an application form and submit a statement of financial need, a short essay explaining your interest in attending the festival, and a writing sample.

The scholarship application portal opens on June 13th and closes on June 20th. THE DEADLINE IS TUESDAY, JUNE 20TH, 11:00PM EST. Please note that travel expenses and lodging are not covered by the scholarship.

10. When will I find out about my scholarship decision?

We assess scholarship applications on a rolling basis. We get many applications every year, so the earlier you apply, the sooner we will be able to provide a decision.

11. The registration window has passed, can I still register?

If we still have seats available for VIRTUAL sessions, then YES. Workshops and master classes fill up quickly, so contact Chantel Kelly at events@kwelijournal.org to see what is open BEFORE you try to submit payment.
