Picture Books: The Interplay Between Text and Art
with Illustrator Michaela Goade

Saturday, September 14, 2019
4:30PM - 5:30PM

Award-winning illustrator, Michaela Goade, will discuss the interplay between text and art. Michaela won the 2018 American Indian Library Association Best Picture Book Award for Shanyaak’utlaax: Salmon Boy. Her forthcoming books include Encounter by Brittany Luby (October 2019, Little Brown Books for Young Readers) and We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom (March 2020, Macmillan).

In this upcoming webinar, Michaela will walk everyone through the journey of her first picture book project: Shanyaak’utlaax: Salmon Boy. Hear about the unique challenges she faced bringing this traditional Alaska Native story to life, from feeling way over her head technically, to the anxieties of wanting to represent her tribe and culture in a powerful and respectful way.

Illustrator Michaela Goade will share insights on the following:

1. Tight and short text in picture books;
2. The action plot and the emotional plot;
3. Key moments of the action in picture book illustrations.
4. Perfect combinations of text and art in picture books by Louise Erdrich, Carole Lindstrom, and other Native authors.

Fee: $25

The webinar will be LIVE, but if the timing doesn’t fit into your schedule, you’ll be able to view the webinar on your own until October 14th at 11:59pm, as many times as you like! Even if you view it live you can re-watch it again, and again, for a month.
